The Divine Liturgy

Orthodox Christians would describe the Divine Liturgy as the central act of worship of the Church, the gathering of the people of God to participate in the Eucharist, receive Holy Communion, and enter into communion with Christ and His Kingdom.

It is not viewed primarily as a sermon, Bible study, or symbolic memorial. In Orthodox theology, the Divine Liturgy is understood as:

  • a real participation in heavenly worship,
  • the mystical offering of the Eucharist,
  • and an encounter with the living presence of Christ.

The Sunday Divine Liturgy is considered the high point of the week.
